Prisoner's Dilemma
A short-term incentive to move first can unravel cooperation for everyone.

- Will acting responsibly first leave me worse off?
- Why does it stall?
- Each player strengthens their short-term defenses, destroying the better result that cooperation could create.
- How can we redesign it?
- Use shared standards, monitoring, and contracts to limit the loss borne by the first cooperator.
Common-Resource Overuse
Using the resource first pays, so a shared resource is depleted.
- Question
- Who will protect the resource that others leave behind?
- Why does it stall?
- The user's gain is immediate and visible, while the cost of depletion reaches everyone later.
- How can we redesign it?
- Align use limits, rights, measurement, and joint management with the actual boundary of the resource.
Public Goods and Free Riding
Funding falls short because people can benefit without paying.

- Why pay if I can receive the benefit anyway?
- Why does it stall?
- Free riding becomes rational, so the funding required for nature restoration never gathers.
- How can we redesign it?
- Combine beneficiary payments with a shared fund so participation produces a better return than standing aside.
Coordination and Simultaneous Investment
Everyone waits because an investment pays only after others invest too.

- Isn't it safer to wait until the other side moves?
- Why does it stall?
- Investments in facilities, markets, and collection networks never start because each side waits for the others.
- How can we redesign it?
- Support coordinated investment with minimum purchases, long-term contracts, shared facilities, and transition finance.
Fragmented Ownership and Holdout
One participant can block an outcome that depends on a connected whole.

- Why can one refusal stop the whole project?
- Why does it stall?
- In connected systems such as ecological corridors and watersheds, a single break spreads through the whole system.
- How can we redesign it?
- Match joint management to nature's boundary, and design clear participation terms and alternative routes.
Weakest Link
The least-protected participant or location determines the result for everyone.

- How do we protect the weakest point?
- Why does it stall?
- A single gap in quarantine or monitoring can bring down the outcome for the entire system.
- How can we redesign it?
- Raise the floor with minimum standards, independent audits, and enforceable consequences for violations.
Negative Externality
Private gains remain visible while losses are pushed onto other people, places, or generations.

- Who is actually carrying the loss?
- Why does it stall?
- Benefits stay with the decision-maker while costs are shifted to nature, communities, and the future.
- How can we redesign it?
- Measure impacts, clarify responsibility, and bring those costs back into prices, rights, and contracts.
Information Asymmetry
People with different knowledge of quality or risk make different decisions and lose trust.
- Question
- Are all parties looking at the same information?
- Why does it stall?
- The side that knows the quality or risk and the side that does not make different choices, undermining trust.
- How can we redesign it?
- Combine shared measurement, traceability data, audits, and indicators that can be disclosed.
Principal-Agent Misalignment
The person assigning the work and the person doing it may benefit from different outcomes.
- Question
- Do the implementer's incentives point in the same direction as the principal's?
- Why does it stall?
- The nature outcome desired by the principal can diverge from the implementer's short-term objective.
- How can we redesign it?
- Connect outcome payments, minimum conditions, monitoring, and responsibility sharing to the implementer's payoff.
Time-Horizon Mismatch
Costs arrive now, while benefits appear much later.
- Question
- Can we bridge the timing gap between cost and benefit?
- Why does it stall?
- Investment costs are paid today, while benefits from soil or forests may take years to appear.
- How can we redesign it?
- Use grace-period finance, long-term purchase contracts, outcome-delay insurance, and maintenance reserves.
Benefit-Sharing Bargaining
Cooperation stalls when parties cannot agree on how to divide the larger shared benefit.

- How should the additional benefit created by cooperation be shared?
- Why does it stall?
- Even when total benefits increase, uncertainty about each party's share can prevent agreement.
- How can we redesign it?
- Keep bargaining viable through beneficiary payments, transparent allocation formulas, minimum guarantees, and review clauses.
Boundary Mismatch
Ecological, decision-making, and repayment boundaries do not line up.

- Do nature, decision-making, and repayment share the same boundary?
- Why does it stall?
- Ecosystems are connected while administrative, ownership, and financing areas remain fragmented.
- How can we redesign it?
- Use a shared map and indicators to align the scope of governance, funding, and repayment sources.
